Mark Haverkamp, Basic training instructor, Hamburg

Teaching with passion, developing with purpose

Mark Haverkamp is a fundamentals instructor at Lufthansa Technical Training in Hamburg. His motivation? Teaching people new skills, supporting them in their professional growth, and enhancing aviation safety through high-quality training. For him, being a trainer is not just a job but also an opportunity to continually learn and grow himself.

“My job is never boring,” he says enthusiastically. He especially values meeting interesting people, witnessing their personal and professional growth, and working in a positive training atmosphere. “Most participants are excited about the training – and that, in turn, makes it even more enjoyable for me.” He also appreciates the autonomy his role provides: “In the training room, I’m more or less my own boss – and a bit of an entertainer, too.”

However, this profession isn’t without its challenges. “Traveling a lot sounds exciting, and it often is – but over time, it can become exhausting, especially being away from family frequently.” Additionally, dealing with challenging trainee personalities occasionally requires patience and tact. Still, for him, the satisfaction of guiding people on their journey and contributing to the advancement of aviation far outweighs these hurdles.
